2018 / 2019
Solo exhibition at The Milwaukee Art Museum & the Minneapolis Institute of Art
(Play recording)
Five photographs for the Milwaukee installation begin from a set of archival photos from a now-closed commercial photo studio in Milwaukee called Graphic Studio. I wanted to work with this archive to connect a history of popular photography to the current political moment, using the images as vessels to talk about other things. For example, I reworked a still life of a transparent toy phone with a new text that talks about contemporary politics and speech, the idea of “transparency” and speaking clearly, and the question of who gets to speak.
