Flat Death thinks about the way that images morph, accumulate, endure and change in meaning and value, and the effect this has on a collective worldview. I was thinking about how some images and objects have lasting importance in our culture and others mean something for a minute and then quickly fade from view. For example, a historical image of an ancient ruin might maintain a certain kind of educational or cultural value over a long time, whereas a watch advertisement might be the height of style for a brief second and then immediately turn to kitsch or to something we’d rather not look at. This series covers the spectrum of photographic tropes , nature photos, studio portraits, architecture shots, advertising still lives, and looks at how these dead or old materials and photographs still perpetuate systems of control. These are ideas that have continued to be important in my work.
